LoadingNon-revenue water, billing, and kiosk operations—not PE/CEng.
Online only

Municipal utilities fail in the unaccounted cubic metre: illegal connections, a kiosk attendant who keeps two books, a vacuum truck that never reaches the informal settlement. This degree starts there. You will map a service area, cost a leak-detection plan a town can staff, and write a bilingual notice a customer can actually read—without stamping drawings as a professional engineer. African Future University centres African municipal practice: tariff politics, peri-urban expansion, and donor projects that install hardware nobody can maintain. Digital billing is taught as systems that fail when connectivity and identity documents fail. The award is academic. It is not PE/CEng, not a utility licence, and not UN-Water employment. It is for managers who must keep a kiosk honest when the borehole diesel is stolen. You will compare a networked urban utility with a peri-urban kiosk system, including landlord politics over on-site sanitation. Identity-checked exams test operations memos, not PE drawings. No UN-Water employment is implied. Study is tuition-free online aside from the examination fee, and peri-urban kiosks are core cases rather than delayed versions of a capital network. MSc Water, Sanitation and Municipal Utilities is taught as one award, not a list of unrelated modules. The published length is 18 months, and the credit total is 36. Students move from Service Areas, Kiosks, and Informal Supply through Service Areas, Kiosks, and Informal Supply; Non-Revenue Water as Governance; Billing, Disconnection Ethics, and Identity; Faecal-Sludge Logistics without Theatre; On-Site Sanitation and Landlord Politics; Public Toilets as Municipal Enterprises, and finish on Writing for Councils and Utilities. Each course has a question, a method, and a submission. In this field, students apply the method of the subject to a defined problem and defend the result. Reading is a core text, a case or dataset, and a critique. The artefact a marker expects is a submission that shows the method, the evidence, and the limit of the claim. The award is built so that a graduate can do the following in practice: Diagnose non-revenue water as an operations and governance problem Design a kiosk or FSM logistics loop a town can staff Write bilingual customer and council notes Teaching assumes the student can read a source, attempt a problem before the seminar, and revise after feedback. Attendance at live seminars is part of the design. The capstone or final course must use the methods of the earlier courses; a project that ignores them does not pass. The pages for each course name the topics that are examined. Those topics are the syllabus. A brochure line is not a substitute for them.
Thirty-six credits: utility operations, sanitation logistics, municipal finance and regulation, and a service-area capstone. Identity-checked exams. No engineering laboratory is claimed.
