Wits University and AFU Announce Climate Resilience AI Consortium and MSc Dual Degree Track

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and African Future University have established the Pan-African Climate Data Science Consortium alongside the launch of their joint MSc in Data Science & Climate Resilience.

The 18-month dual-degree track leverages open satellite data from earth observation constellations, regional meteorological telemetry, and hydrological modeling to train African data specialists. Students build production-ready machine learning pipelines designed to predict crop yields, track seasonal groundwater fluctuations, and forecast climate migration risks.

"African economies face disproportionate exposure to extreme weather volatility, yet continental infrastructure has historically relied on external forecasting models that lack granular local telemetry," said Dr. Thabo Mokoena of the Computational Geosciences Group. "Through this dual degree with AFU, our students are building algorithms tailored directly to the ecological realities of the Sahel, the Rift Valley, and the Southern African veld."

Graduates receive two Master of Science diplomas—one from AFU and one from Wits—alongside access to high-performance computing clusters for ongoing post-graduate environmental research.
